This week, we proudly recognize Correctional Officer Week and extend our deepest gratitude to the men and women who serve on the front lines of our correctional facilities.
Correctional officers play a critical role in maintaining safety, security, and structure—creating an environment where education and rehabilitation can take place. Their partnership allows us to reach our students and deliver life-changing opportunities that prepare individuals for success beyond incarceration.
As a token of appreciation, the ISTC Foundation has purchased hats for all correctional officers assigned to the College across the state. This week, Interim President David Walters personally presented Main Campus officers with their hats and shared a few words of appreciation for their continued dedication and service.
At Ingram State, we know that our mission would not be possible without the commitment, professionalism, and support of these officers. They are not only protectors of our facilities, but also key contributors to the second chances we work to provide every day.
Thank you for your service and unwavering support of our students and staff.

Today, Ingram State hosted members from Chambers County Economic Development to learn more about how we are strengthening Alabama’s economy through second chances and reentry efforts. They toured our Elmore County locations—Tutwiler, Draper, and Main Campus—and saw first-hand the training our students complete as they work toward industry-recognized credentials.
These are highly skilled individuals who simply need an employer willing to give them a chance. When given that opportunity, they bring value to the workforce and return to our communities as tax-paying citizens.
National data continues to show why this work matters. According to federal labor research, formerly incarcerated individuals face an unemployment rate of over 27%—nearly five times higher than the general population—despite a strong desire to work. (Prison Policy Initiative)
At Ingram State, we are working to close that gap—equipping students with the skills, certifications, and confidence they need to succeed and helping employers tap into a ready and capable workforce.

Real-world training. Real results. 🔧
During the week of April 6, ISTC students gained hands-on experience by replacing a broken window unit with a high-efficiency Fujitsu 24 SEER mini split system. Led by Student Aide Reed, this project brought together multiple skill sets and showcased the power of workforce-ready training.
Logan, an HVAC student, Industrial graduate, and licensed electrician, played a key role in the installation, while Fernandrez, an HVAC student and Carpentry graduate, assisted with the structural woodwork. Under Mr. Reed’s leadership—who also oversees mini split installation labs with in-shop trainers—students are gaining the practical experience needed to succeed in high-demand careers.

Please join us in celebrating Ms. Amelia Fox, Chief Financial Officer for J.F. Ingram State Technical College! 🎉
Ms. Fox began her career with Ingram State in 2001 as a Special Education Services Data Technician. Through dedication, hard work, and a deep understanding of the college’s mission, she advanced through multiple roles, consistently demonstrating exceptional financial and administrative expertise. Her professionalism and leadership led to her being named the first Chief Financial Officer in the college’s history — a testament to her experience and trusted stewardship.

In February, our highest enrollment sites were:
🔴 Staton – 55 students
🟡 ATEF – 40 students
🔵 Tutwiler – 38 students
These numbers represent more than participation—they represent opportunity.
Adult Education is a critical first step for justice-involved individuals. It builds foundational skills in reading, math, and workforce readiness—equipping students to earn their GED, pursue career technical training, and ultimately secure meaningful employment upon release.
By investing in education, we are reducing barriers, strengthening reentry outcomes, and creating safer, stronger communities across our state.
At J.F. Ingram State Technical College, we don’t just educate—we prepare individuals for a successful future beyond the gate.

This special day gives our students the opportunity to connect directly with community organizations, support agencies, and employers who are ready to walk alongside them as they transition back into society. From employment opportunities and job placement assistance to housing resources, identification services, and community support programs, these connections are critical to ensuring a smooth and successful reentry journey.
Reentry is about more than completing a program — it’s about building stability, restoring confidence, and creating real pathways to long-term success. By bringing resources directly to our students before release, we help eliminate barriers, strengthen support systems, and increase the likelihood of job retention and reduced recidivism.
We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from our community partners who believe in second chances and the power of workforce education. Together, we are building stronger futures and safer communities across Alabama.
